Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a single motor-vehicle collision in Pāpa‘ikou that critically injured a 48-year-old female pedestrian from Pāpa‘ikou on Friday, February 7, 2025.

Responding to a call at 7:59 p.m., police determined that a 2018 Honda HR-V multi-purpose vehicle operated by a 55-year-old Hilo man was traveling south (Hilo) bound on Highway 19. A man and woman were walking west in the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Highway 19 and Mill Road, when the Honda HR-V struck the woman, causing her to sustain life-threatening injuries. The woman was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center for treatment and is listed in critical condition. She is expected to be transported to Queens Medical Center on Oahu for further treatment.

The male pedestrian was not struck, and neither he nor the male driver of the Honda sustained any injuries in the collision.

The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and is continuing the investigation, which is classified as a negligent injury. At this time, police do not believe speed, alcohol and/or drugs are factors in this investigation.
