Police to Hold Sign-Waving Event Tomorrow to Promote Traffic Safety

As part of Hawai‘i Police Department’s ongoing efforts to educate citizens about the dangers of reckless driving, speeding, and impaired driving, the Kona Community Policing Section is teaming up with community members and groups to conduct a sign-waving event on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in North Kona.
“We are uniting with community groups to promote safe and responsible driving on our highways,” says Torey Keltner, Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Manager. “Every sign, every voice, and every life matters. Let’s make a difference in our community and drive with aloha.”
So far this year, there have been 9 traffic fatalities compared to 5 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a year-over-year increase of 80 percent for fatalities.
Events such as these are part of the police department’s Community-Traffic Awareness Partnership (C-TAP) program. CTAP is a partnership with the police and communities to educate and encourage safe driving within designated areas across Hawai‘i Island. Community members hold signs warning motorists of the dangers of speeding in their neighborhood. A “Speed Board” display is used by the police to show motorists how fast they are going. Police will follow up weeks later with actual enforcement to ensure that motorists comply with the speed limit.
