K9’s of Hawaiʻi Police Department
Working police dogs have been an integral part of Hawaiʻi Police Department (HPD) since 1983 when two officers underwent 200 hours of training with the two canines, a German short-hair pointer and a black Labrador, who were donated to the department by private citizens.
Over the years, HPD has had a variety of police dogs, including German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retrievers, and German short hair pointers. We’ve also expanded beyond narcotics K9s, to include live find human tracking canines.
Currently, HPD has a total of six K9s working in both the Vice and Juvenile Aid Sections.
Each K9 and their handler underwent rigorous training and certification before each canine joined the department. Our teams also undergo consistent training throughout the year, as well as annual re-certification. Both our narcotics and live human tracking canines also participate in community outreach for school and public demonstrations to foster positive relationships with law enforcement.
Whether searching for illicit drugs or missing people, our K9 teams work tirelessly to keep our island community safe with their skills in tracking, detection, and protection. Each of these remarkable dogs plays an important role in our law enforcement efforts.
Vice Canines
Canines Archer, Boyke, and Kim work with handlers in our Area II (Kona) Vice Section, while K9s Cash and Axel work in Area I (Hilo) Vice with their respective handlers.
Our narcotic detector canines are vital assets in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking. Using their remarkable sense of smell and intense training, these highly trained canines are able to locate small amounts of drugs hidden in various environments, from vehicles to buildings and parcels.
