Police Chief

Police Chief Moszkowicz

Benjamin Moszkowicz

Benjamin Moszkowicz was appointed Chief of Hawaiʻi Police Department by the Hawaiʻi County Police Commission on December 16, 2022.

Chief Moszkowicz comes to Hawaiʻi Island from Honolulu Police Department, where he most recently served as Major in the Traffic Division. During his 22-year tenure with Honolulu Police Department, he served in every division from patrol watch commander to overseeing the 60-member Police Mountain Bike Team, to managing the Information Technology Division and Human Resources Division.

In addition to being a certified Drug Recognition Expert and Instructor, Moszkowicz was honored with the first-ever Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Hawaiʻi Lifetime Achievement Award for his tireless dedication to preventing impaired driving through education and enforcement.

A graduate of the FBI National Academy, Moszkowicz holds a Bachelor of Art’s Degree in Public Administration with a specialization in Justice Administration from the University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu and a Master of Science Degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego.

Deputy Chief

Deputy Chief Reed Mahuna

After being named Acting Deputy Chief on July 1, 2023, Major Reed K. Mahuna was sworn in as Deputy Police Chief during a ceremony at the department’s Hilo Training Room on Friday, January 12, 2024. He was permanently appointed as Deputy Police Chief effective Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

Prior to being named Acting Deputy Chief, Mahuna served as Major of Area I Operations, overseeing the Criminal Investigation Division, which includes Vice, Juvenile Aid, and the Criminal Investigation Sections, as well as the Crime Lab. He has also served as Major of the Technical Services Division, which includes the department’s Communications Dispatch Center, Communications Maintenance Section, Computer Center, Records and Identification Section, and Traffic Services Section.

Mahuna’s former assignments include serving as a Police Officer and Field Training Officer in the South Hilo district, Police Officer in the Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit, Detective in Area I and Area II Criminal Investigation Section, Lieutenant in the Puna district, and Lieutenant in Area I Vice Section. He has also served as Captain of the Area II Criminal Investigation Division, Captain of the Hāmākua and South Hilo districts, and Captain of the Area I Criminal Investigation Division
