Ocean View Man Charged With Array of Offenses Following Ocean View Shooting

Detectives with Hawaiʻi Police Department’s Area II Criminal Investigation Section arrested and charged 49-year-old Bradford Borum of Ocean View with an array of offenses, including terroristic threatening and criminal property damage following a shooting incident in the Kaʻū district on Monday, November 11, 2024.

At 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Kaʻū patrol officers responded to a residence on Lei Parkway in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision. The 42-year old male victim from Ocean View reported that a few minutes prior to calling police, he was shot at while seated within his own vehicle at a property on the 92-8400 block of Trade Wind Boulevard. The victim further told police he did not sustain any injuries, although his vehicle sustained damages consistent with being shot at. 

Responding officers determined that prior to reporting the incident, the victim went to the property located on Trade Wind Boulevard in an attempt to contact his ex-girlfriend who he believed was at the property. Upon arriving at the property, a heated verbal altercation ensued between the victim and his ex-girlfriend. 

Borum, who is in a relationship with the woman, attempted to intervene and then requested that the victim leave the property. Borum reportedly then retrieved a firearm from within his residence and fired several shots towards the victim, who was in the process of leaving the grounds. 

Shortly after the incident was reported, the victim’s ex-girlfriend contacted police to report the incident. She told police that the victim came over to her current boyfriend’s house wanting to discuss the visitation of a child that the woman and the victim have in common. She further related that Borum attempted to intervene and as a result he shot at the victim’s vehicle.

At 4:30 p.m. on Monday, a detective assigned to the Area II Criminal Investigation Section along with Kaʻū patrol officers contacted Borum, who surrendered an unregistered handgun and ammunition and was taken into custody. A search of the property at the shooting location resulted in the recovery of several spent casings believed to have been discharged from the handgun that was also recovered.

On Tuesday, November 12, after conferring with the County Prosecutor’s Office, Borum was charged with the following offenses:

• First-degree criminal property damage
• First-degree terroristic threatening
• Second-degree reckless endangering
• Permit to acquire a firearm
• Mandatory registration of a firearm

His total bail was set at $17,000, and his initial court appearance was slated for Wednesday, November 13, in Kona District Court.

During the course of the investigation, police determined that the victim had gone to Borum’s residence unannounced and uninvited. As a result, a counter complaint was generated and that case will be forwarded to the County Prosecutor’s Office for their review.
