Media Release

Hawai‘i Police Department is pleased to announce that Police Communications Officer Nashly Leslie was named Dispatcher of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2024, (January, February, March), and Police Communications Officer Kainapau “Ka’ina” Mossman was named Dispatcher of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2024, (April, May, June).

Leslie, who has worked for 16 years as a Police Communications Officer with Hawai‘i Police Department, was honored for her dedication and innovation spearheading projects that enable the Communications Section to run more smoothly.

Known for being enthusiastic and a team player, Leslie volunteered to step up to the role of Acting Supervisor on March 17, 2024, knowing she would work 20 hours straight, working two full shifts and half of a third shift. She then returned to work at 6:45 the next morning for her regular shift with a positive attitude.

In addition to her ongoing duties, one of her recent projects was updating all the directories on every console, an essential, but daunting project.

Police Communications Officer Kainapau “Ka’ina” Mossman was honored for her compassionate efforts in assisting a man experiencing a mental health crisis. A Police Communications Officer since December 2022, Mossman has distinguished herself with her calm demeanor and positive attitude, pitching in where wherever needed.

On June 26, 2024, Mossman received a call from a distraught man who stated he had undiagnosed mental health issues and felt like “doing something”. Worried that he might harm himself or others, Mossman stayed on the line with him for 10-15 minutes until officers arrived on scene. She repeatedly reassured the man he would be ok, demonstrating concern and empathy. After officers arrived on scene, the man was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center where he was treated for his mental health issues.
