Media Release

A South Kohala district police officer was recently honored for his outstanding investigative skills tracking down an armed and dangerous suspect wanted for a string of burglaries in Waikoloa Village earlier this year. Officer Justin Uresti was recognized as Officer of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2024, by the Hawaii Island Safety and Security Professional’s Association (HISSPA) in a ceremony held Friday, June 14, on the Kohala Coast.

A six-year veteran of the department, Officer Uresti is a patrol officer in the South Kohala district. In early March, Hawai‘i Police Department issued media releases regarding a suspect wanted in relation to three burglaries and two trespassing investigations in Waikoloa Village. Officer Uresti meticulously canvassed neighborhoods, identified and interviewed witnesses and neighbors, as well as collected forensic evidence. He developed leads and conducted follow-up investigations for cases that were connected to, but initiated by, other officers.

Officer Uresti’s thorough investigations led to the arrest of the wanted suspect who was subsequently charged with a slew of crimes ranging from multiple burglaries to unauthorized entry into a dwelling, and trespassing cases. The suspect was also charged for three warrants for violation of the terms and conditions of his release, with a total bail amount of $350,200.

Additionally, Officer Uresti’s investigative skills and relentless efforts led to the discovery of suspects for other thefts, vehicle break-ins, and stolen vehicles in the South Kohala area.

“Officer Uresti’s attention to detail and professionalism embody the Hawai‘i Police Department’s core values and we’re proud of the work he did in this investigation,” said South Kohala District Captain Roylen Valera.
