During the week of June 17, through June 23, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 467 DUI arrests compared with 479 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.5 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

Hawaii Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 471 major crashes so far this year, compared with 412 during the same time last year, an increase of 14.32 percent.
To date, there were 16 fatal crashes, resulting in 18 fatalities (two of which had multiple deaths and one crash was reclassified as a suicide), compared with 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one died at a later date) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 77.78 percent for fatal crashes and 80 percent for fatalities.
In 2024, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) is zero compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
