During the week of May 20, through May 26, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 386 DUI arrests compared with 408 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.4 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 396 major crashes so far this year, compared with 362 during the same time last year, an increase of 9.4 percent.

To date, there were 16 fatal crashes, resulting in 18 fatalities (two of which had multiple deaths), compared with 8 fatal crashes, resulting in 9 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one died at a later date) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 100 percent for fatal crashes and 100 percent for fatalities.

In 2024, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) is zero compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year. 

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
