During the week of May 13, 2024, through May 19, 2024, Hawai`i Island police arrested nineteen (19) motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 366 DUI arrests compared with 389 during the same period last year. This is a decrease of 5.9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

Hawaii Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 382 major crashes so far this year, compared with 342 during the same time last year. This represents an increase of 11.7 percent.
To date, there were 16 fatal crashes, resulting in 18 fatalities (two of which had multiple deaths), compared with 8 fatal crashes, resulting in 9 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one died at a later date) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 100 percent for fatal crashes and 100 percent for fatalities.
To date, the non-traffic fatality count so far this year is 0 compared to 0 non-traffic fatalities (not on a public roadway) for the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
