During the week of January 22, through January 28, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 78 DUI arrests compared with 91 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14.3 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

Hawaii Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 62 major crashes so far this year, compared with 68 during the same time last year, a decrease 8.8 percent. 

To date, there were three fatal crashes, resulting in three fatalities, compared with two fatal crashes, resulting in two fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 50% for fatal crashes and 50% for fatalities.

In 2024, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) is zero compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year. 

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
