10-30-24 Police Respond to Unexploded Ordnance Sighting in Waimea

Hawaiʻi Island police responded to the Waimea Nature Trail off of Opelo Road around 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2024, for a report of an unexploded ordnance found in the stream next to the trail.
The area was secured and personnel from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers were contacted. After an initial assessment, the U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) division on Oahu was summoned to further address the ordnance.
The Waimea Nature Trail was temporarily closed from Opelo Road to Kahawai Street. It is unknown when it will reopen. No homes, business, or roadways were affected.
Police would like to thank and remind the public of the Three R’s of explosives safety:
• RECOGNIZE – when you may have encountered a munition, and that munitions are dangerous.
• RETREAT – do not approach, touch, move or disturb it, but carefully leave the area.
• REPORT – call 911 and advise the police of what you saw and where you saw it.
