Media Release
Hawaiʻi Police Department’s Hilo Community Policing Section and the Hawaiʻi Isle Police Activities League, (HI-PAL), would like to congratulate all the winners and thank the keiki who participated in the recent HI-PAL Endless Summers Basketball Tournament held last month in Hilo.
Nearly 200 kids, age 9 to 14, participated in the three-day tournament with 24 teams playing in four separate divisions: Varsity Girls, Intermediate Girls, Elementary Girls, and Intermediate Boys.
The tournament was organized by Hilo Community Policing Officer Darren Abalos in coordination with former Hawaiʻi Police Department Major Randy Apele.
“The participants were excited to play in the yearly tournament, which had a large number of teams per bracket with players from on and off island,” said Officer Abalos. “The participants enjoyed being able to play against other teams in friendly competition.”
HI-PAL is a program of the Hawaiʻi Police Department in which police officers interact with youth in various activities as mentors. This positive connection encourages teamwork, citizenship, and responsibility among youth. If your Hilo community organization is interested in hosting a HI-PAL event in your area, please contact Hawaiʻi Police Department’s Hilo Community Policing Officers at (808) 961-8849.
