During the week of January 1, through January 7, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 16 DUI arrests compared with 26 during the same period last year, a decrease of 38.5 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 16 major crashes so far this year, compared with 22 during the same time last year, a decrease 27.3 percent. 

To date, there was one fatal crash, resulting in one fatality, compared with zero fatal crashes (Rvsd 2/07/23: fatal crash on 1/06/23 reclassified to a medical condition), resulting in zero fatalities for the same time last year.

To date, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) is zero compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year. 

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
